Hey, my name is Ryan Landau and I’m the founder of purpose.jobs. I’m a Metro Detroit native who worked in Washington, D.C. before coming back to start my own business in Detroit.
In 2017 I founded purpose.jobs, the Midwest’s #1 startup community. We connect talent with purpose-driven startups here in Detroit, Ann Arbor, and other Midwest cities. But we don’t just match based on skills and compensation (that is part of it, but not all of it). Instead we focus on values, experience, and culture contribution.
how I got started
I got started in my career by selling cotton candy and snow cones 🙂 Seriously!
I’ve always had a passion for entrepreneurship. After my snow cone business, I worked as the VP of people at Ambassador and was also the co-founder and CEO of Chalkfly, a school and office supplies ecommerce company that was acquired by Global Office Solutions.
I started purpose.jobs because the process of finding a new job can feel frustrating, time-consuming, and not very human. A person’s purpose, values, and personality matter just as much as the skills they bring to the table. I wanted to create a platform that centered around this: community, education, culture, and purpose. Helping people find fulfillment in their career, realize their potential, and do what they’re meant to do—that’s been our mission since day one.
What I love most about working in Southeast Michigan
Detroit and the Midwest have been growing like crazy. Detroit has seen a 37.2% increase in net tech employment in the last decade. And as one of the most affordable cities in the country, people have really high standards of living. I think the Midwest secret is out though, and we’re seeing a lot of huge tech companies, like Amazon, as well as smaller tech startups open offices here. It’s a booming tech hub with really innovative companies and people. It’s exciting to be a part of this movement.
