Governor Whitmer announced Monday that the Detroit region is moving into the next phase of the MI Safe Start Plan, allowing retailers to open on June 4, and restaurants to reopen on June 8. Bars and restaurants are going to be allowed to reopen at 50% capacity starting Monday, though groups are required to stay 6 feet apart and servers must wear masks. Gatherings of under 100 people are also now permitted with social distancing. Check out this tool created by the state to track the ongoing changes to different regions around the state under the MI Start Safe plan.
While many of the limitations are still in place you can now start to safely get out and enjoy local businesses and restaurants in Metro Detroit. Be respectful of other people in public and those around you, and make sure to take all of the necessary precautions to keep yourself and the community safe. Here are a few ideas for places to visit whether you are ready to visit in person or would prefer to continue to enjoy from home as we slowly get back to normal:
Patios – Restaurants are opening up at 50% capacity so you can dine in at your favorite bars, restaurants, and breweries in the region again. It’s patio season so we’re definitely excited to visit some of the best outdoor dining patios around the region. Our ambassadors created these lists of breweries and wine experiences to enjoy during quarantine as well.
Black-owned restaurants – These minority owned restaurants in Detroit were catering for people in need at local social service agencies during the pay it forward campaign, and you can also check out this Instagram highlight by Terra Castro with black owned businesses to support as business slowly get’s back to normal.
Fitness – With most gyms and studios off limits, you can still stay active outdoors and virtually. here is a list of local studios offering online yoga sessions and fitness classes. Under the new order, outdoor classes and fitness activities are permitted so check out your local gym for updates on how they may be adapting courses. Today is also global running day, so join We Run 313 for their nationwide virtual 2 mile run and tag them on social media.
Museums – As much as we all loved the #RecreateDIA campaign, we all know libraries and museums are best enjoyed in person. Museums are also permitted to open on June 8, so you can visit these cultural institutions and art organizations in person. Check in advance for limits on capacity, adjusted hours, or required reservations.
Outdoor spaces – Another great option for outdoor dining is getting together with a group of friends or family for a picnic at one of the many Metroparks around the region. Our Ambassador Dr. Paul shared some options for health activities in Detroit, or check out Austeja’s favorite green spaces in Detroit.
