How to Participate in Small Business Saturday in Metro Detroit

This upcoming Saturday, Nov. 27, 2021, is Small Business Saturday. Created in 2010 by American Express, this day has morphed into a nationwide shopping “holiday” as a day to celebrate and support small businesses.

As we continue to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the easiest ways to support your local community is by shopping small. And what better day to celebrate than on Small Business Saturday?

Metro Detroit is home to many entrepreneurs, business owners, and innovators. Before shopping around for the holiday season, do your research and try to shop small. When you shop small, you often are speaking with or seeing the business owner, encouraging their dream, and supporting your local economy. American Express states that for every dollar spent on Small Business Saturday, $0.67 stays within the local business community. Even if you are shopping small online, it is a great way to show your support to creatives.

Now, to find where and what stores to shop for this Small Business Saturday. The first step? Do your research. A lot of news outlets and local bloggers create helpful lists each year on how and where to shop small. For example, Click on Detroit offers great insights, tips, and tricks for readers. View their Small Business Saturday page content here.

To help get you started, we have also broken down some local areas to explore and shop for Small Business Saturday.

In Macomb County alone, there are nearly 1,600 independently owned and operated retailers. And this year, they are hosting a “Shop Local Macomb” contest that offers shoppers the chance to win one of ten $150 gift cards. Further information, including rules and key details, is on Macomb County’s website.

In Downtown Detroit, the Holiday Markets have returned for another year. This year, 18 local retailers are claiming a home base in the winter markets from Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2021, to Friday, Dec. 31, 2021, perfect to get your Small Business Saturday on, before, or after the actual date.  Downtown Wayne County is making an event out of Small Business Saturday including Facebook lives, weekly featured businesses, and a Small Business Saturday Shopathon event, which offers shoppers the chance to win a $25 gift card. Read more about the event and how to shop here.

If you are looking to expand your shopping further than the local economy, Etsy is always available to support small business owners across the nation.

Many cities and news outlets are updating their informational pages about this year’s Small Business Saturday daily. Continue doing your research and try to support in any way you can. Even sharing, liking, or commenting on a social post, blog, or video can help small business owners spread the word and create awareness for their business. Your contribution doesn’t always have to be monetary.
