Anchored by the imposing Cadillac Place building, New Center has long been Detroit’s second commercial district dominated by notable skyscrapers and office buildings. The neighborhood is located off Woodward Avenue north of Midtown, close to popular residential areas such as historic Boston-Edison. The architectural legacy of Albert Kahn lives on in many of the area’s famous buildings, from the Kahn Building to the Fisher Building. The neighborhood is home to the nationally recognized Henry Ford Medical Center, as well as startup business incubators like TechTown that are bringing a new economic engine to Detroit.
New Center has a growing retail scene with many new shops popping up along Woodward and Grand Boulevard. High-end restaurants serve European-inspired dishes, while laid-back spots offer up American classics including the coney dog. Visit the Fisher Theatre to see a Broadway show or stop at the Motown Museum to learn the story behind Detroit’s iconic music label. New Center Park has become a gathering place for the community and hosts a summer-long series of weekly events, including outdoor movies and concerts, happy hour, summer jazz, and family events.
In addition to all of the historic architecture, be sure to add museums and outdoor monuments – including the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant Museum, which is the birthplace of the Model T and is a few minutes walk from New Center.
