Why Vivica Addrow Chose to Attend the University of Michigan

Fall 2023 Let's Detroit Influencer Vivica Addrow shares why she chose to attend the University of Michigan.

Did you know that the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor has a graduation rate of 93%? This means out of approximately 55,000 students, at least 51,150 graduate. Not only is there a high graduation rate, but there are also impeccable academics, athletics, and opportunities for students to experience.

My name is Vivica Addrow (she/her), and I am a second-year student with an intended major in biology, health, and society on a pre-med track. Ever since I was a young girl, I have dreamed of attending college. There was always something appealing about living in a dorm room and surviving off of a limited meal plan. But I had no idea I would end up attending the University of Michigan. It was never in my plan to become a “wolverine.” In fact, my heart was set on attending Boston University, but somehow, I became a student at one of the top universities in the country.

When it comes to the University of Michigan, there are 75 majors to choose from, ranging from anthropology to computer science to architecture. I chose to major in biology because I’ve always found science interesting; it challenges my thinking. The classes are also great for advancing your education and preparing you for your career. And it’s not just the science division – the University of Michigan’s mathematics department is known for its advanced courses, and even its art department is well-known for its creativity.

Outside of diversity in majors and challenging classes, the University of Michigan has much to provide to incoming and attending students. There are research opportunities, clubs, alumni connections, and more. I participate in the Black Undergraduate Medical Association (BUMA), which allows Black pre-health students to come together and support each other. I chose to join this club because I’ve always wanted to be a part of a community where people have the same interests as me.

After hearing about what I like about the University of Michigan, I hope you make the decision to attend. Because if you aren’t going blue, then what are you doing?
