WHERE AND HOW TO GIVE BACK THIS THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY IN DETROIT

The holiday season is all about being thankful for what you have and giving back to those who are not as fortunate or maybe currently experiencing tough times. And with a year such as the current one, tough times is, unfortunately, an understatement for many individuals and families as our country continues to endure the effects of both an economic crisis and a public health crisis, as a result of COVID-19.

However, despite imposed physical limitations and safety regulations that have produced a new normal encouraging social distance from others, there are still plenty of opportunities to participate in charities this Thanksgiving holiday in Detroit. Check out our list that details where and how you can give back locally to support others:

GLEANERS COMMUNITY FOOD BANK

Help Set the Table for a Happy, Not Hungry, Thanksgiving! Give back by donating money that will go towards meals for those who are hungry. Any donation that is made through Gleaners will be matched by Ford Motor Company dollar for dollar, doubling your donation. Click here to give.

DETROIT RESCUE MISSION

Through Holiday Hope For The Hungry, you can help those facing a hunger crisis. Every $1.95 given now will provide a meal this Thanksgiving to families and individuals that are facing hunger and have nowhere else to turn. Between now and Thanksgiving over 243,000 meals will be served to those who are hungry and hurting. Give generously here.

AREA AGENCY ON AGING, MEALS ON WHEELS

The Area Agency on Aging provides a Holiday Meals on Wheels program – along with Meals on Wheels throughout the year. You can donate or volunteer to both organizations. For more details on each program and what is needed, visit their websites here (Detroit – Wayne County) and here (Oakland, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, St. Clair and Washtenaw).

CAPUCHIN SOUP KITCHEN

Visit the “Ways to Give” page via Capuchin Soup Kitchen where you’re welcome to give monetary gifts, planned giving, Christmas cards, the donor bill of rights, and the bonanza barrel raffle. In-person volunteers are currently not allowed due to COVID-19.
