Why did you start your business?

I am passionate about the marketing and public relations industry because I realized I have the talent to be a vehicle versus a passenger.

Being a Christian, I knew I needed to be selective in the entertainment industry, and being my own boss allowed me to do that. I also wanted to be the boss I never had and be in charge of what I could make without a ceiling. In addition, I never have to fear being let go or put in a space that doesn’t allow me to work where my passion and talents lie.

What were some challenges of starting your business, and was there anything you would do differently?

It was making sure that my personal life was in order first before even thinking about running a business. I had a few obstacles in my personal life that I was able to remove through the grace of God and focus on my why. Also, it just took quite some time to educate myself on paperwork, proper tax filing, building business credit, and more.

Out of all the things I have gone through so far in the process, I would not change anything. Each step has allowed me to learn and be better and stronger. I look forward to one day helping others with what I wish I had access to, such as resources and connections, through my agency.

What should aspiring Black entrepreneurs know before getting started?

“Teamwork makes the dream work.” Knowing your boundaries and loyalty is a must! Safe spaces, inclusion, and professionalism should also always be a priority.

Are there any resources you recommend for starting your own business?

Tech Town and Score Mentors.

What advice would you give to aspiring Black entrepreneurs looking to start their own businesses? Are there specific advantages or disadvantages to being a Black business owner?

The sky is the limit! First, you should support other independent businesses near you. Second, I would say there are advantages during Black History Month because it’s all kinds of resources and connections available. Being in Detroit alone is an advantage – there are many resources and things to get into and qualify for. Overall, the advantages are always there it’s just about your mindset, hard work, consistency, being prepared, and connections.
