Let’s Detroit’s 2022 Back to Michigan Career Fair is quickly approaching! On Tuesday, Nov. 22, from 5-8 p.m., many of the region’s top employees and young professionals seeking to grow their careers will convene at Valentine Distilling Co. for casual networking and career development. To help attendees prepare for the event, we asked participating employers for tips or recommendations, as well as insight into what stands out to hiring managers and things candidates should avoid. Check out what they had to say below. Hopefully, this will help you prepare to land your dream job!
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan
- Avoid regurgitating your job description with a list of responsibilities. You can summarize areas of accountability in a sentence or two for each role, but most of the space on the page should highlight your major accomplishments.
- If possible, make an effort to highlight the quantifiable impact of your major accomplishments by utilizing numbers/metrics throughout your resume.
- Consider crafting multiple versions of your resume and adjusting the content to better align with the specific job opportunity that you are applying to.
Cooper Standard
- Keep your points on the resume ‘short and sweet’ and highlight relevant skills for the role.
- Highlight achievements and innovations reached in your previous/current roles.
- Have your resume formatted in the STAR method for in-depth interview questions and quantify your results.
- Don’t format your resume inconsistently and mix past/present tense.
- Don’t put your job listing on your resume from oldest to most recent (tip: chronological order from current role to oldest role).
Meritor
- Try to keep your resume to two pages.
- Make the resume easy to read, with minimal or neutral colors.
- Try to align the responsibilities on your resume as it applies to your career path.
