Baseball season is here, and the Detroit Tigers’ Home Opening Day is an annual event many fans eagerly await. Even if you’re not attending the April 6 game in Comerica Park, there’s plenty of spirited fun to be had with the local bar hoppers and tailgaters. Here are some tips, especially for new tailgaters, to survive the day.
Your attire is among the most critical aspects of the day. Make sure your casual outfit includes at least one of the Tigers’ team colors of orange and navy, or get some merch locally, like at Gameday Detroit.
Home opening day weather has been unpredictable, with temperatures ranging between 32-59 degrees, so it’s essential to dress in layers. Consider wearing a light jacket or hoodie and opt for jeans. No matter what the weather brings, wear comfortable shoes and a hat to protect yourself from the sun.
If you plan on tailgating, arrive early to get a spot. Parking lots around Comerica tend to open three hours before game time, so tailgating enthusiasts can start grilling and having fun with friends.
If you’re worried about getting around downtown during the event, consider taking the QLine, an easy way to navigate up and down Woodward Avenue.
If you want to watch the game, here are some of the best bars to watch the game or eat, drink, and celebrate with friends inside:
Hockeytown Cafe - An iconic Detroit sports bar known for its massive television screens and fan camaraderie, just across the street from Comerica Park.
Tin Roof Detroit - Another great place to grab craft beers and enjoy live music and other fun activities all day, just steps away from the stadium.
Union Assembly – A sit-down restaurant with upscale bar foods and drinks, including Detroit-style pizza and their popular Union Mac n Cheese.
Even though emotions are high, there’s no excuse to be disrespectful to the people around you or the city of Detroit. Remember to dispose of your trash correctly in designated bins. Also, refrain from damaging any infrastructure along with respecting people’s boundaries. This helps lower upkeep costs for the area and continues bringing the positive appeal of Detroit.
