How Rochester Gave Me a Shopping Addiction

Let's Detroit Campus Influencer Brooke Sauer shared her passion for shopping and how her city of Rochester, MI, is the perfect (or worst - at least for her wallet!) location for it.

If you asked me to define my life in two words, I would say “retail therapy.” It’s a real thing, people; we all know it. When I moved to Rochester, Michigan, it was proven. Not only does the city have a cute downtown with small businesses, but it also has a large outdoor mall with more well-known businesses. Now, as a college student, Rochester is not the best place for my wallet. But money comes back, right? So my shopping addiction will continue, and yours could too if you find yourself in this little Michigan city.

Shopping Basics in Rochester, MI

First, let’s start out with some basics of downtown Rochester shopping. Catching Fireflies is the perfect gift shop for something unique, small, and inexpensive. Whether it’s a pair of cat socks for your crazy cat-addicted Aunt Linda or a nice bath bomb to use on your self-care Sundays, this is the place for you.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for something to wear, I recommend Hello Fancy Boutique. It’s one of my favorite places to window shop. I love the new fall sweaters they have; it makes me want to get a pumpkin spice chai. And speaking of drinks, my friend Kate – who also grew up in Rochester – recommends the coffee shop Dessert Oasis. She gets the Kerouac, which is Earl gray tea with milk, honey, lavender, and vanilla.

Lastly, my all-time favorite shop is Downtown Tarot Company. I love this store for its beautiful crystals, zodiac sign candles, and much more. It even does intuitive readings in-store. It’s probably one of the most interesting places you could find yourself.

The Village of Rochester Hills

Moving on, let’s talk about the Village of Rochester Hills, an outdoor shopping area. I love shopping here because of all the name-brand stores. Some of my favorites are Francesca’s, DryGoods, lululemon, Aerie, and American Eagle. Growing up, this was the spot to be. It remains the place to be, even as a young adult, but now, for the places with a more sophisticated style, such as White House Black Market, Talbots, Chico’s, and Banana Republic.

And once you’re done shopping in the Village, you will also have plenty of restaurants to choose from. If you want to sit in a nicer restaurant, go to Bravo’s. If you just want something quick and easy, go to Shake Shack. Plus, there’s the Starbucks for your coffee craving in the Barnes and Nobles.

The Holidays in Rochester

Going back to Downtown Rochester, not only are the shops good, but during the holiday season, they light up the entire city with Christmas lights. It provides the perfect backdrop for cute pictures with friends and family. To the side is a picture of what it looks like: a magical experience.

All in all, Rochester is an amazing place to break your bank account.
