Local and National Coffee Shops to Try Out

Allie McComber

With the cold weather, there’s nothing better than warm drinks. Lucky for us Michiganders, we have plenty of places to choose from, both local and chains.

Below are some of my favorite coffee places to check out, ranging from national favorites like Starbucks to places only locals know, like Red Dot Coffee. These coffee shops are not listed in any specific order based on my preferences. These are just all the coffee shops I have tried and liked, and I am leaving a review with some tips if you choose to go there!

    Biggby

Biggby Coffee - Washtenaw Avenue, Ypsilanti MI

My favorite place to go for coffee is Biggby, a coffee shop founded in Michigan. You can find one in almost every town and take advantage of its monthly coupons. Each location is individually-owned and frequently has additional deals. The Biggby near me has Monday through Friday deals that are the same weekly, so you can plan what to get, which is nice. Biggby also has a rewards program that, after your 12th drink, you can get any size drink for free! I would say it is not the best place to study because it can get very busy at peak hours and most locations do not have a lot of seating. They do have free wifi, though. Overall, Biggby is an excellent place with tasty drinks! While I'm working on this favorite's list, I am drinking my favorite: an iced caramel latte with almond milk!

    Dunkin’

Dunkin' - East Ann Arbor Road, Plymouth MI

Dunkin’ is another one of my favorite coffee shops, depending on my mood and where I'm at. Just like most places, they make everything differently, but with Dunkin’, it is either just right or a bit gritty (the grit is from the East Coast, where Dunkin’ originated). I wouldn’t recommend it as a place to study; there typically isn’t wifi and not many locations have inside seating. It definitely has a great vibe to meet friends and catch up, though! My favorite drink from here is a French Vanilla iced coffee with one cream and one sugar.

    Starbucks

Starbucks - West Congress Street, Downtown Detroit Detroit

If I'm being honest, I've never been a huge fan of Starbucks. I think they are too expensive and overrated, but this year, they have grown on me. I have been exploring their drink options by using their app. So, if you have a tough time picking a drink like me, or you need to customize it, I highly recommend the app! (You can order from it and pick it up in the lobby or the drive-thru.) There are a lot of locations to visit, and the company only continues to grow. As far as studying, I say it's good 50/50 of the time. More often than not, when I go there, there are a lot of foot traffic and long lines, but if you are the person who needs distractions or background noise, Starbucks is definitely the palace for you! My favorite drink here is an iced caramel macchiato with almond milk!

    Black Diesel Coffee

Black Diesel Coffee - East Stadium Boulevard, Ann Arbor MI

I recently started branching out to find new spots to study. Typically, I go to the library or study at home. I drove by Black Diesel several times before and kept wanting to try it. One Thursday afternoon, I went, and I will admit that I was kind of intimidated. Its menu has so many options, and I didn’t even know what drip coffee was! But the guy working that shift was nice and helped me figure out what I wanted. Black Diesel is on the pricey side and charges for basically everything – ice, creamer, etc. It is small on the inside, but it has a nice cozy vibe for studying and wifi. When it’s warm outside, it has a patio too. The drink I usually get there is an iced mocha drip coffee with almond milk.

    Red Dot Coffee

The Red Dot Coffee Company - North Center Street, Northville MI

When I used to be a caregiver, my coworker told me she went to Red Dot Coffee all the time. It only took me two years to finally try its coffee. What I liked most about Red Dot is that it has a larger space to enjoy than other coffee shops, both inside and out. (I believe the building it is in used to be a house, so there are some unique features about it.) They do have wifi, and the password will be on your receipt. I only went there once, but I liked the vibes and simple menu. There was a decent amount of foot traffic, but if you get a spot away from the register, you’ll be just fine. The drink I tried there was an iced caramel latte.
