Coffee Shops and Brunch Spots in Detroit

Aylin Amaro

Among my favorite things about Detroit are its coffee shops and brunch spots.

There’s a wide variety of places that cater to the diverse tastes of people in the city; it doesn’t matter what color scheme you prefer, the type of food, or the overall vibe. There’s something for everyone.

    AWAKE Cafe

AWAKE Cafe - 3rd Avenue, Detroit MI

One of my favorite cafés to attend study groups is AWAKE Cafe. Despite its modern appearance, the place has a sense of comfort. Apart from providing a comfortable environment for studying, it also offers amazing food and drinks, including my favorites, wraps and iced chai lattes! This cafe is also unique because it uses beans from a farmer in Honduras.

    Madcap Coffee

Madcap Coffee Company - Farmer Street, Detroit MI

Madcap Coffee is another favorite coffee shop of mine in Metro Detroit. It caters to both tea and coffee lovers. Tea drinkers can choose from an expansive selection of tasty teas, and coffee drinkers can choose their favorite coffee beans, flavors, milk, and more for a truly customized drink. My favorite thing on the menu is The "Elefante Nuevo" coffee.

    Rosa

Rosa - Grand River Avenue, Detroit MI

If you're looking for a friendly coffee shop to relax, Rosa is where you should go. It's a coffee shop owned and operated by women and located in the historic Rosedale Park area of Detroit. I was immediately captivated by this cafe's color scheme and decor when I first walked through the door. There was so much cuteness about everything, and I was stunned when they gave me my eggnog latte in a cup that said, "Tis the Season."

    The Hudson Cafe

The Hudson Cafe - Woodward Avenue, Detroit MI

If you are looking for a good brunch spot, run to Hudson Cafeon Woodward in Detroit! This restaurant offers a wide variety of unique options with a signature touch from the chef. My tip: try the French toast – Hudson Cafe makes the best. I enjoy trying different toppings on mine, and one of my favorites is their "Very Berry French Toast" stuffed with banana cream cheese. The "Classic Strawberry Waffle" is also quite tasty if you prefer something simpler.

    Jagged Fork

The Jagged Fork - Southfield Road, Lathrup Village MI

The owners of Hudson Cafealso run several other restaurants in Metro Detroit under the name Jagged Fork. Its menu is similar to Hudson Café, but it's different enough to make it worthy of a trip. You may have one near you, with locations in Grosse Pointe Farms, Rochester Hills, West Bloomfield Township, Lathrup Village, and Ann Arbor.

    Sugar Factory - Detroit

Sugar Factory - Detroit - Woodward Avenue, Detroit MI

Many tourists visit a popular place in Detroit called Sugar Factory. Locals also enjoy it, especially those with a sweet tooth (hi – it's me!). I went for the first time on my birthday and fell in love with the presentation of the food and drinks and all the sugary options to choose from. I ultimately ordered the “Sunshine Breeze,” and felt like I had just flown through the air with this drink and the yummy peach rings that topped it off! I also enjoyed the 'Sugar Factory Signature Burger' to top it all off.

    Bobcat Bonnie's

Bobcat Bonnie's - West Nine Mile Road, Ferndale MI

Bobcat Bonnie's is another one of my go-to brunch restaurants. It has multiple locations throughout Metro Detroit, from Ann Arbor to Wyandotte to Detroit. Upon discovering this place, it was everything to me. It has a lovely patio at the entrance, and I enjoy so many things on the menu, but my favorite is the "chilaquiles." If you’re 21 or older, you might also enjoy the cereal shooters.
