Working with DTE Energy in Detroit has been a transformative experience, turning a typical internship into a journey within a workplace that genuinely feels like a second home. The sense of belonging is palpable, creating an atmosphere that’s not just professional but also caring and understanding.
From my first day at DTE in March 2022, the company’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment was evident. The emphasis on valuing each team member has cultivated a culture that encourages collaboration, open communication, and personal growth.

One of the standout features of my DTE experience is the opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals. Being surrounded by colleagues who are not only experts in their fields but also enthusiastic mentors has been invaluable. Their willingness to share knowledge, provide guidance, and offer support has transformed the learning curve into an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
A particularly exciting project I’ve been involved in centers around the integration of SQL with Python (programming language). The goal is to revolutionize our shortage report process by creating a seamless and automated solution. Instead of the traditional method of running code line by line, we’re working towards developing a single script that can generate comprehensive reports and seamlessly export them into Power BI (an interactive data visualization software product developed by Microsoft).
This initiative is not only about streamlining processes but about embracing innovation and leveraging technology to enhance efficiency. The prospect of contributing to a project that aligns with DTE Energy’s forward-thinking approach is both professionally fulfilling and indicative of the company’s commitment to staying at the forefront of industry advancements.
A supportive manager can make all the difference in the workplace, and at DTE Energy, my manager is more than just a supervisor—she’s like a second mom. Her guidance, encouragement, and unwavering support have been pivotal in shaping my internship experience. It’s a testament to the company’s commitment to not only professional development but also the personal well-being of its employees.
Beyond the doors of DTE Energy, Detroit offers a unique workplace vibe that sets it apart. The city’s companies, including DTE Energy, have a genuine warmth and camaraderie that creates a sense of community. I am grateful for the chance to work for a company that does so much for the Detroit community.
Reflecting on my time at DTE Energy, I can’t help but advocate for more people to experience the kind of workplace environment that I’ve been fortunate to enjoy. The lessons learned, friendships forged, and impactful work undertaken underscore the value of inclusive opportunities that go beyond a standard job.
In essence, my DTE Energy co-op isn’t just a convergence of SQL with Python; it’s a fusion of passion with purpose.
