After 17 years, starting in 2022, Detroit’s annual Winter Blast will no longer be held at Campus Martius Park in Downtown Detroit. Due to funding challenges, the winter festival will be moved to Detroit’s neighboring city of Royal Oak, taking place from Feb. 4-6, 2022. It will be located east of Main and south of 11 Mile near the Royal Oak Farmer’s Market and Centennial Park.
Winter Blast Royal Oak – the festival’s new name – was originally designed to showcase the City of Detroit during Super Bowl XL. It provided unique winter programming, quality of life, and helped showcase local businesses and positive developments in Downtown Detroit, according to the Winter Blast press release.
This programming will remain the same despite the location change. Attendees will be able to enjoy an outdoor skating rink, ice sculptures, live music, family activities, marshmallow roasters, the Winter Slide, and more. Entrance to the event and ice skating will also remain free.
“I want to thank the City of Royal Oak and the Royal Oak DDA for providing critical funding to continue this great winter tradition, and we’ll have an exciting new layout and plans to announce in the coming weeks,” Jon Witz, festival owner, said in a statement. “Winter Blast is a celebration of winter experiences, dining, live music, and family fun. Attendees can expect the same wonderful winter-themed attractions they’ve come to know and look forward to over the years, as well as some new programming.”
In early 2022, Winter Blast Royal Oak will share a complete events schedule. Check back at winterblast.com for more details.
