At the Detroit Regional Chamber’s 2021 Detroit Policy Conference, the perseverance and future of small businesses in the region was a leading topic. Many local business owners shared how they strategically navigated the challenges of the pandemic and what they project for the future of local small businesses. Small business vendors also showcased their products at the Detroit Small Business Street exhibit and shared their stories with the Chamber.
Many of the small businesses interviewed were Black-owned, and in recognition of National Black Business Month, the Chamber is sharing a series of blog posts to learn more about each business.
Nicole Grant, founder of MG Studio Professional Haircare, a salon and hair care line, spoke with the Chamber during the Conference. Grant shared she has been a hairstylist for more than 20 years, and she created MG Studio in 2008. The brand now has 18 different naturally made, formulated, and handcrafted hair care products.
“[Our products] are made for everyone—no matter if you have color-treated hair, relaxer, permanent waves, if your hair is fine or thin, if you have a scalp condition—we have a product for everyone,” Grant said.
Before creating her own hair care line, Grant tried a variety of products on her clients’ hair, and she was frustrated about how each one would stop working and damage her clients’ hair. So, she created her own products with three things in mind: “to strengthen hair, to grow hair, and to continue to give health.”
MG Studio products currently available online include shampoos, beard cleansing products, leave-in and regular conditioners, oils, pomades, sprays, and creams. Products can also be purchased in-store at Directions Salon (2554 Grand River Ave. Detroit, MI 48201), where Grant does hair. MG Studio products can also be purchased at salons in Southfield, Michigan, and New Orleans.
“One thing I’d like to let people know is that our products feed everyone’s hair. A lot of products have a barrier or just lays on it. Our product does not do that at all. It actually adheres and it balances your hair and your scalp,” Grant said.
