Did you know April is Global Volunteer Month? There’s no better way to banish winter blues and say hello to spring than to jump into some fun volunteer opportunities. Research consistently shows that serving others makes us happier and more content — plus, it’s a great way to get outside, make new friends, and fall in love with Detroit even more this season.
Check out these seven volunteer opportunities in metro Detroit this April: Whether you’re an animal lover, you’ve got a major green thumb, or you enjoy being around kids, there’s something for you here.
Spread some springtime joy by helping assemble and pass out 100 Easter baskets to families in need with Hey Y’all Detroit. Happening at Gorham Playground on April 8th, this opportunity is perfect for anyone who loves kids! Sign up here. P.S. Can’t make it? They’re also taking $2 donations to help with the cause via Venmo or CashApp at @HeyYallDetroit.
Don’t forget Earth Day is April 22! Show some love to Mother Earth that day by volunteering with the Detroit River Coalition. From Belle Isle Conservancy to DNR Outdoor Adventure Center, several participating organizations do cleanup days so you can keep your favorite Detroit spots free of litter. Learn more here.
Take your love for decorating and help make a new home extra cozy for families transitioning out of homelessness, thanks to Humble Design Detroit. Several dates in April are available to help sort donated furniture in the warehouse or decorate homes and unload materials for families moving in. Learn more here.
Help support Keep Growing Detroit in its mission to promote a food sovereign city by volunteering at their urban farm, allowing local Detroiters to grow and harvest fresh fruits and vegetables. Whether you have an expert green thumb or you’re a beginner, it’s the perfect opportunity to get outside, learn more about gardening, and support an amazing mission. Find out more about weekly service opportunities here.
If you’re looking for another way to show our corner of the planet some love on Earth Day, join the Dequindre Cut Spring Cleanup to help remove litter from this beloved downtown greenway. Happening on April 22, this volunteer event is open for all ages and all abilities. Read more about it here.
Join New Beginnings Animal Rescue in preparing to give some adorable kittens new homes this year through the Kitten Shower happening on April 15 at Jim Brady’s in Royal Oak.
