Looking for a way to make an impact on the region? Help a Detroit student navigate life after high school graduation by mentoring them through the summer!
United Way for Southeastern Michigan, Detroit Public Schools Community District and the Detroit College Access Network are launching a new event for graduating seniors without a plan, Find Your Future: Senior Edition.
High School counselors at select DPSCD schools are inviting about 100 seniors with no plans after graduation to participate in Find Your Future to help them learn about and access college, training and job placement opportunities in Detroit. The goal is that every senior is in college, enrolled in a training program or has a job by the fall and the role of a mentor is to help them get there. Apply here to become a mentor.
Mentors interested in this opportunity will:
- Attend the April 26th Find Your Future event to meet students and support workshop facilitators. The workshop is Friday, April 26 from 8 – 2 at Wayne County Community College Downtown Campus. Mentors will be required to participate in a 2-hour mentorship and college support training during the event.
- After the event, mentors will help students navigate the process of applying and preparing for college, including assisting with financial aid applications, school enrollment, transportation, etc. Mentors will also assist with developing goals, sharing knowledge, advice and resources, as well as providing guidance, motivation, emotional support and role modeling. Most of the responsibility will be through text communication and coordinated United Way events.
- Commit to connect with students about twice a month from April through October.
