April 22 marks Earth Day! There are countless ways to make a positive impact on the planet right here in our own backyard. Here are five ideas to inspire your celebrations.

As the chill of winter fades away, Metro Detroit comes alive with the vibrant colors and renewed energy of spring, just in time for Earth Day on April 22. Whether you’re participating in community clean-up events, planting trees, exploring nature trails, attending eco-friendly workshops, or supporting local sustainable businesses, there are countless ways to make a positive impact on the planet right here in our own backyard. Here are five ideas to inspire your celebrations:

Spend Some Time Outside with WB Parks

April 18, 2024, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Recreation Activities Center – 4640 Walnut Lake Rd. West Bloomfield Township, MI

In celebration of Earth Day, spend some time outside with WB Parks exploring their outdoor natural play area and participating in numerous activities, such as animal interactions, recycled crafts, and more. This is a free event, but registration is required. Guided nature hikes are also available at 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. for $5 a family. Separate registration is required to participate.

Participate in an Earth Day River Clean-up at Eliza Howell Park

April 20, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

23751 Fenkell Avenue Detroit, MI

Show the Rogue River a little love on this Earth Day with Sidewalk Detroit. Adult participants can wade into the river (waders are provided) to pull out trash. Volunteers of all ages can help haul the trash to the road and begin cleaning it for an exciting community-built art installation led by local artist Halima Cassells.

Celebrate Earth Day with the Detroit Historical Society

April 21, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

5401 Woodward, Detroit, MI 48202

In collaboration with Michigan State University’s Science Festival, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum invites Detroiters to participate in a complimentary family day filled with engaging activities focused on the rich natural habitat and human legacy of Belle Isle.

The event spotlights their latest exhibit, “Microplastics: Here, There, Everywhere,” and provides crafts and activities highlighting the historical significance of the Detroit River and its impact on both human communities and wildlife.

Support Earth Day Cleanup at Lake St. Clair Metropark

April 21, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

31300 Metropolitan Parkway, Harrison Township

Join volunteers at the Nature Center at Lake St. Clair Metropark to pick up tools, safety equipment, and area assignments to help clean up the park in celebration of Earth Day. Volunteers must be six or older, and snacks and water will be provided. Registration is required.

Celebrate Earth Day at the Farmington Hills Nature Center

April 22, 2024, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Celebrate Earth Day at the Farmington Hills Nature Center and enjoy free family-fun activities, live music, face painting, earth-friendly crafts, informational booths, giveaways, local food trucks, and more. All ages are welcome, and registration is not required.
