There are several reasons why I chose to work at Caterpillar as my first internship, first and foremost being that my dad used to work for the company about 8 years ago. He still talks about them and is a stakeholder. Caterpillar is not only a leader in the construction industry, but also a pioneer in innovation.

Before coming into the internship, I wanted to contribute to this amazing workplace culture, and help further innovation while maintaining excellent sustainability metrics, and my academic journey through courses like SCM 303, SCM 371, SCM 372, and SCM 373 provided me with a strong foundation in procurement strategies, contract negotiations, and supplier relations. These classes were not just traditional classes, but also brought in guest speakers and explored warehouses through various visits during the semester. These classes were not just theoretical; they were practical stepping-stones that prepared me for the real-world challenges I would face at Caterpillar.

They taught me the value of varied thinking and the importance of sustainable and ethical decision-making. I also learned a bit about the ins and outs of supply chain management before working at a Fortune 100 company, giving me a significant leg-up in the competition. At Caterpillar, I was able to leverage these experiences to engage with diverse teams, drive meaningful projects, and develop a holistic understanding of the procurement process, but also how to conduct myself as an intern.

Choosing Caterpillar for my internship was a deliberate step towards aligning my career with a company that values innovation and sustainability. As an Environmental Studies and Sustainability minor, Caterpillar’s commitment to building a better world resonated with my personal and professional goals.

During my internship, I was exposed to complex global supply chains and the intricate balance of managing them effectively. This experience has been invaluable, reinforcing my decision to pursue a career that not only challenges me but also contributes positively to society. This was furthered when I led a volunteering campaign with United Way, helping the company donate nearly $16,000 to Crittenton Centers, a nonprofit day care.

As I reflect on my time at Caterpillar, I realize that it was more than just an internship; it was an experience that helped shape my career trajectory. The knowledge gained from my classes, the leadership skills developed in my clubs, and the hands-on experience at Caterpillar have all converged to prepare me for a future in supply chain management. I am now more confident than ever in my ability to navigate global procurement and make a significant impact in any organization that I join in the future.
