Must Try: Mexican Food in Southeast Michigan
Krishaun Burns
Having grown up in Michigan, I have had the pleasure of being able to enjoy some of the best Mexican cuisine the state has to offer. From traditional dishes to modernized ingredients, these restaurants each offer something unique that make them stand out from the rest.
So, if you’re ever looking for a great Mexican meal, be sure to check out my favorites list of Mexican restaurants in Southeast Michigan!
1
Mexican Fiesta
Mexican Fiesta - Dearborn Hgts. - Ford Road, Dearborn Heights MI
Since 1962, Mexican Fiesta has been serving delicious food in Southeast Michigan, with locations in Dearborn Heights, Canton, and Hartland. My favorite one is the Dearborn Heights restaurant, as that was the original location and where I feel the food tastes best, but you honestly can’t go wrong at any of them. My go-to order is the ground beef and cheese burritos, and I’m obsessed with their chips and hot salsa. I also recommend their margaritas if you want a refreshing drink!
2
Xochimilco Restaurant
Xochimilco Restaurant - Bagley Street, Detroit MI
Located right in Detroit’s Mexicantown, Xochimilco was one of the restaurants my family frequented as I grew up. Known for their quick and friendly service, delicious and well-portioned food, and central location, Xochi’s is a restaurant you need to try out. It draws crowds both during lunch and during busy times downtown, such as during sports games, but because of their quickness, you won’t have to wait too long for a seat. I love their ground beef burritos here, but you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu!
3
Condado Tacos
Condado Tacos - Selden Street, Detroit MI
Located throughout the U.S., Condado Tacos is a staple in Southeast Michigan, offering delicious tacos for a variety of tastes, including for vegetarians. In Michigan, Condado has locations in Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Royal Oak, Ann Arbor, Detroit, and Troy – this means you can try it out no matter where you are in the lower peninsula. The queso and chips are also delicious here, and I highly recommend you get it to start.
4
Atwater Street Tacos
Atwater Street Tacos - Atwater Street, Flat Rock MI
If street tacos are more up your alley, Atwater’s Street Tacos is a place you have to visit Downriver for. Located in Flat Rock, it’s a cute place by the river, and you can sit on its small patio to enjoy the views or grab your food to-go.
5
Armando's
Armando's - Vernor Highway, Detroit MI
Also located in Mexicantown in Southwest Detroit, Armando’s provides incredible Mexican food that you can enjoy in the restaurant or to-go. It first opened in 1967 and offers generations of signature dishes and a friendly atmosphere.
6
Mexicantown Restaurant
Mexicantown Restaurant - Bagley Street, Detroit MI
Mexicantown is the sister restaurant of Xochimilco and is located right next door. Although the food is not the exact same, it’s close enough, high-quality, well-portioned, and fairly priced. The service is also amazing, whether you come alone or with a large group. I loved the watermelon margarita here!
7
Taqueria Los Charros
Taqueria Los Charros - Dix Highway, Lincoln Park MI
This restaurant is a great place to stop if you’re headed Downriver or if you’re craving delicious birria tacos (or ramen!). Taqueria Los Charros is a fairly small restaurant located in Lincoln Park but provides amazing vibes, perfect for a date night, friend gathering, or family dinner. You can’t go wrong with anything on he menu, but I’ll repeat the birria tacos are a must-have.
