Career Fair Done, Now What? – Top Tips for Following Up with Employers After Career Fairs

The Let’s Detroit 2022 Back to Michigan Career Fair was last week. We hope that everyone in attendance was able to make valuable connections with potential employers. But now that the event is done, what do you do to ensure these connections are not lost? We asked some of the participating employers for tips or recommendations for following up with employers after the event and what methods they prefer. Check out what they had to say below.

  • Tell the representative what positions you’ve applied for and the job number, if applicable – that will make it much easier for them to follow up on the status of your candidacy.  If you haven’t applied to anything but wish to establish a relationship, send your resume along with a note letting them know you’re interested in a potential future career with their company and would like to stay connected.
  • If you are sending a follow-up note to a recruiting professional that you recently connected with at a networking event, try your best to personalize the note by integrating memorable details that you remember from your conversation with one another. Ultimately, your goal should be to keep the follow-up note relatively concise and straight to the point, but adding a personal touch may help the recruiting professional remember the context of your previous discussion.

  • Follow the company on social media (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter) to keep up with its innovative news.
  • Connect with the recruiters you met at the event and prepare a connection message thanking them for the opportunity.

  • If sending a follow-up to a hiring manager, I suggest following up via email. This makes it more personable and puts you on their radar.
  • If you are following up with an employee you met at the event, I suggest doing so via LinkedIn and sending a request to connect. Doing this will put you in their database for future positions.
  • If the company has a Talent Network, I suggest joining this, so you get alerts on new openings that align with your career path and goals.
