In celebration of Women’s History Month, Norwest Gallery of Art is introducing the second cohort of artists for its artist-in-residence program, WomxnHouse Detroit, on Saturday, March 26, from noon to 6 p.m.
This residence supports Black, Indigenous, and people of color women and non-binary artists and curators in support of building Detroit neighborhoods.
With a curatorial focus on African and Black American contemporary art, the residency is a catalyst for growth for creatives of color. It includes housing, studio space, stipends, exhibition space, and access to innovative networks. Norwest Gallery’s goal is to improve representation for women of color in the art world while giving a platform and resources to provide for other artists and curators of color.
Last year’s inaugural Womxnhouse Detroit cohort consisted of 14 female artists. They developed an immersive installation in the childhood home of Norwest Gallery’s founder, director, and curator Asia Hamilton. Hamilton described the residency as, “a space for women to create, heal, and be united.”
This year’s cohort is called ‘Allium’ and comprises:
Each resident artist will create, curate, and exhibit their work in Detroit’s historic District One, in the St. Mary’s/Crary neighborhood and at Norwest Gallery of Art, in the Rosedale Park neighborhood. The gallery is located at 19556 Grand River Ave., Detroit, MI 48223.
Click here to meet the artists and follow their social media to see their work.
Donation-based tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite. The proceeds will fund the residency and efforts to support art and culture in Detroit.
