Every year in early May, people gather in the center of Detroit’s Mexican community in Southwest Detroit to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. There is a parade along Vernor Avenue, festivities in Clark Park, and patrons support local restaurants along the corridor. Due do the Coronavirus pandemic, this year’s parade is cancelled but we can still celebrate the Mexican culture and community in Detroit while in quarantine:
The Mexican Patriotic Committee of Metro Detroit is hosting a 5 de Mayo virtual COVID313-Town Hall tonight from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm to raise funds for Detroit Community Care Collaborative. More than a dozen artists and organizations will be streaming live as a way to celebrate from home. Tune in on the Detroit Public Television Facebook or their website for the live stream.
Cinco de Mayo is typically one of the busiest days of the year for businesses in Southwest Detroit, and a number of restaurants, grocery stores, and gift shops are offering curbside pickup and promotions to celebrate Cinco de Mayo this year. The Southwest Detroit Business Association has put together a guide of local businesses offerings for the day, so stopping by to make a purchase is a great way to support the community while celebrating Mexican culture.
Brew Detroit is collaborating with Honeybee Market in Southwest Detroit for Cinco de Mayo to offer a grocery kit with Honey Bee’s in-house tortilla chips, salsa, guacamole, 3 limes, and a 12 pack of Cerveza Delray for $25.
