Theatre

Olivia Johnson

I am practically immersed in theatre every day, whether it be in classes, rehearsals, or performances. Throughout my studies at WSU I have had countless opportunities to see theatre at numerous, diverse venues in the Detroit region. Here are some of my favorites!

I love the community aspect of theatre— bringing people together of all diverse backgrounds to celebrate the arts!

  • 1

    Hilberry Theatre

Hilberry Theatre - Cass Avenue, Detroit MI

Specifically the Underground Theatre below the Hilberry produces extremely fun, experimental works that will stick with you for years. They also have a student summer show apart from the WSU school year that produces shows completely by students!

    Detroit Public Theatre

Detroit Public Theatre - Woodward Avenue, Detroit MI

Completely run by women, this non-profit theatre produces diverse, gut-wrenching works that are so often flawlessly executed.

  • 3

    Slipstream Theatre Initiative

Slipstream Theatre Initiative - Hilton Road, Ferndale MI

Slipstream is a more intimate space that creates wildly original pieces of theatre. They'll always leave you asking questions and rethinking your ideas of theatre.

    Detroit Actors Theatre Company

    2900 E Grand Blvd - Detroit, MI 48202 USA

Low cost, high quality theatre. I especially love their summer shows that are often performed for free at New Center Park!

    Planet Ant Black Box

Planet Ant Black Box - Caniff Street, Hamtramck MI

A rentable theatre space— I specifically love their Boxfest Festival that takes place in August which showcases female directors works! They also have theatrical drag performances most Saturday nights at the bar across the street! Fun improv nights as well.

Matrix Theatre Company - Bagley Street, Detroit MI

Usually produces works that focus on social justice— always powerful.

  • 8

    Detroit Repertory Theatre

Detroit Repertory Theatre - Woodrow Wilson Street, Detroit MI

Strong community involvement— Detroit Rep has been around since 1957! Worth checking out for the history alone.

  • 9

    Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit

Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit - Antietam Avenue, Detroit MI

Specifically showcases works with youth actors— a great chance to see kids have fun doing what they love.
