Located a few minutes from Downtown, New Center, and Midtown, Woodbridge is an active Detroit community with historic homes, a growing number of art institutions, and welcoming residents. Woodbridge is named after Gov. William Woodbridge and has been home to various famous Detroiters, including the Detroit News and Cranbrook Academy Founder George Booth.

Woodbridge’s historic district was recognized by the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and includes the area roughly bounded by Grand River Avenue, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, the John C. Lodge Freeway, Trumbull Street, and the Edsel Ford Expressway. The neighborhood is known for its unique, Victorian style homes. Notable historic structures in the area include the Eight Precinct Police Station, the William Northwood House, the Trinity Episcopal Church, and the Trumbull Avenue Presbyterian Church.

A Friendly, Artistic Community

Woodbridge is known for its friendly residents who come from all walks of life, including students, college professors, working professionals, musicians, artists, and others.

The arts scene is alive and well in Woodbridge. The Trumbullplex, a nonprofit housing collective and gathering space, hosts a variety of events, showcasing musicians, theatre, poetry readings, and dance parties. Alley Culture, located in an alley off of Willis, has featured the work of local and national visual artists.

The neighborhood also houses the quirky Woodbridge Bicycle Garden, a community space dotted with cycling-inspired sculptures. Still Point Zen Buddhist Temple welcomes people from all walks of life and faiths to its Sunday meetings, retreats, and workshops.

Interested in learning more about Woodbridge’s close-knit community? An annual Home and Garden Tour is held each September to give the public an inside view of the neighborhood and its unique residents who continue to leave their mark on this special neighborhood.

Currently, Woodbridge Neighborhood Development, a nonprofit community improvement organization, is working to address the housing and development needs of Woodbridge with a focus on the physical redevelopment of the area.
