Healthy Activities in Detroit
Paul Thomas, MD
I’m an expert in this topic because I’ve lived in and around Detroit for all of my life and I’ve engaged in a lot of healthy activities for people of all ages.
I love that we have the potential to change the culture in Detroit to a culture that focuses more on health and wellness.
1
Belle Isle Conservancy
Belle Isle Conservancy - River Place Drive, Detroit MI
Belle Isle Conservancy is a wonderful place to visit and see exotic plants. It's also nice to walk around the grounds and take in the gardens and views of the Detroit skyline.
2
Detroit River Walk
Detroit River Walk - Detroit RiverWalk, Detroit MI
The Detroit Riverwalk just keeps getting better and better! A super healthy way to spend a Sunday afternoon, even with the ice cream 🍦 It is really neat to see the different animals on our walk, and only a small tear for Joe Louis Arena that is slowly being taken down, as something better will take its place soon. The only constant is change, and I hope for an even brighter future in Detroit.

Gallup Park Canoe & Kayak Livery
Gallup Park Canoe & Kayak Livery - Fuller Road, Ann Arbor MI
When it gets warmer outside, spend a relaxing day on the Huron River by kayak - lots of wildlife, too. Swans 🦢 , ducks 🦆 , turtles 🐢, fish 🐟, cardinals, and more. I’m convinced that there are hundreds of healthy things to do in and around Detroit and this is one of them in nearby Ann Arbor.
4
Greenfield Village
Greenfield Village - Maple Lane, Dearborn MI
We had a relaxing stroll through Greenfield Village - summer is a great time to catch blooming flowers, a base ball game, and geese drinking from the water pump.

Shed 5
Shed 5 - Eastern Market, Detroit MI
Eastern Market Flower day in late May (the Sunday after Mother's Day) is wonderful. It's fantastic to be able to pick out your flowers and beatify your home and garden with what they have at Eastern Market Flower Day.

Belle Isle Aquarium
Belle Isle Aquarium - Inselruhe Avenue, Detroit MI
A rainy day in Detroit, and a great day to visit the Belle Isle Aquarium - love the green tiles that create an underwater feeling.
7
Beacon Park
Beacon Park - Grand River Avenue, Detroit MI
Love love love Beacon Park Detroit - in the summer people play volleyball, table tennis, and in general enjoy a beautiful night. In the winter, a big tent houses even more physical activities. This is what Detroit parks can and should be - safe, inclusive, active, and healthy.

Lafayette Plaisance Park
Lafayette Plaisance Park - Antietam Avenue, Detroit MI
I love seeing people at play in Detroit’s parks 🌳🤸🏽♀️⚽️🚲. If you go for a run or a walk or a bike ride here, you can easily link up with the nearby Dequindre Cut. There's also playground equipment for children and Soccer Fields
