If you’re not very familiar with the winter sports landscape, you might not think that Michigan is a great place for Skiing or Snowboarding since most of the land is pretty flat. You might be so lucky as to find a nice hill to go sledding on a snowy day, but you probably couldn’t name any mountains in the area, because they don’t really exist. Or do they?
Last Sunday, I went Skiing for the first time in Holly, and I’m starting to wonder if we undersell Michigan winters in a big way. I had no idea there were some really good places to go skiing until I read Kurt Hamel’s list of the best places to enjoy winter sports around the region. As a first time skier, I was a little nervous about how hard it would be, but I actually picked it up pretty easily and had a ton of fun. Even though it was a little awkward at first (I definitely had to start on the bunny slopes) I eventually worked my way up to the more difficult slopes at the ski resort, and by the end of the night I couldn’t get enough! Slowly making your way up the slope on the ski lift and then zooming down is an awesome feeling, and I’m considering getting my own set of ski’s to visit the slopes more often.
I really used to hate the winter in Michigan; it’s cold and grey, and you can feel cooped up for almost 6 months out of the year. But over the last few years, I’ve learned to enjoy winter by intentionally spending more time outside and staying active year-round. I love morning walks to catch the bus after it snows, and on days when the temperature is in the 30’s or 40’s you’ll probably see me cycling in the winter. I’ve found that most winter days aren’t below freezing and there isn’t much snow cover, so for most of the season if you dress properly it can be pretty comfortable. Beyond spending a little time outside every day, outdoor activities like skating and skiing are becoming some of my favorite things to do each winter. I don’t think I would have ever thought about winter like this a few years ago, but it’s become one of my favorite times of the year!
