Van Buren Township

Van Buren Township is home to Willow Run Airport, the second busiest airport in Southeast Michigan, and Bellville Lake, the only lake in Wayne County.

Established in 1835 and named after the eighth U.S. President, Van Buren Township is a premier community in Southeast Michigan. Today, Van Buren Township is a thriving city of an estimated 27,950 residents enhanced by its homes, schools, churches, shopping centers, and industrial parks.

Situated between Detroit Metropolitan and Willow Run Airport, Metro Detroit’s second busiest airport, and at the crossroads of I-94 and I-275, Van Buren offers a unique location for business development alongside family-oriented neighborhoods. The township offers a mix of rural and suburban lifestyles. It surrounds the city of Belleville and many often confuse the two; however, Van Buren Township and Belleville are two separate cities.

Van Buren Township’s downtown business district offers a unique variety of gathering places for locals and visitors to enjoy one another’s company, delicious food, history, art, entertainment, and more. Through partnerships with Van Buren Township, the Parks and Recreation Department, and September Days Senior Center, the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is committed to hosting family-friendly events, workshops, and activities all year-round.

The township has over eight miles of the Huron River and Bellville Lake, the only lake in Wayne County. The lake was created in the 1920s when Detroit Edison built the French Landing Dam to generate hydroelectric power. Encompassing 1,200 acres, it is Wayne County’s largest inland lake, and has an extensive parks and recreation system that includes five community parks, a sledding hill, picnic shelters, walking and biking trails, sports fields, playgrounds, boat launches, fishing piers and a beach. It is considered the jewel of the community and offers lake-front living at its best.
