I am an experienced Accountant in Downtown Detroit. I moved from Dubai to Detroit in 2012 to pursue a dual-major in Accounting and Global Supply Chain Management at the Mike Ilitch School of Business at Wayne State University.
As a side-hustle, my friends and I have developed a forward-thinking eco-friendly lifestyle garment brand in Detroit, and beyond.
how I got started
Networking, networking, networking. For a very long time, I really didn’t know what this meant or entailed. However, I quickly learned that networking is essentially “strategic courage.” In finding that courage, I started meeting various individuals in the industry through career fairs, networking events, and various social media platforms.
Initially, I received an internship with Ally in 2015 as a Compensation & Benefits intern. Subsequently, I was asked to come back the following Summer in 2016 as an Internal Audit intern.
Fortunately, through these exceptional internship experiences, I was able to expand my professional network, and received three offers at Ally in the Summer of 2016. One offer with Internal Audit (where I interned), and two separate but distinct rotational program opportunities. It was a very tough decision to make. However, I decided to join the 3-year Accounting LEADership Development program due to it’s attractive career opportunities it offered.
What I love most about working in Southeast Michigan
Everything about working in Southeast Michigan is fantastic. The energy, the diversity and the culture. The best part about it is the revitalization of Detroit’s downtown scene. It’s small enough for you to connect with locals, and large enough for you to capitalize on the city’s growth opportunities. Not to mention Detroit’s notorious for being a “food mecca” – shout out/RIP to Anthony Bourdain who put our local food spots on the map!
