Hello, my name is Makayla Sears and I am a hardworking, dedicated, and passionate student. I graduated from Cass Technical high school through their Communication and Arts curriculum. I am a Detroit Promise recipient. I attend Henry Ford Community College studying through their Associate Science degree as well as Wayne State University studying in their Kinesiology, Exercise, and Sport Science degree. At Henry Ford Community College I work in the Learning lab which is a designated area for students to engage in a social study environment and receive tutoring in most core subjects. At Wayne State University I had the opportunity to connect with a Program by the name of APEX Scholars. Apex is an alternative admissions program offered through Wayne State University which helps bridge the gap between High school to undergraduate studies. In my spare time I enjoy engaging in music, exploring different parts of the city, and spending quality time with family and friends.
Groups I’m a part of: Local Circles Detroit, NSLS, GDYT, & APEX Scholars
how I got started
From a very young age the passion was always there. I was always reading, taking notes, and even role playing. I would take care of anyone who let me. I have always seen myself as a caregiver, provider, and some sort of support system to others. This nurturing aspect I possessed led to full interest in being a part of the medical field. Now, my interests have become a passion and led me in the direction of pursuing kinesiology which is the study of movement & exercise. I’ve always been in love with the idea of being able to physically work with patients through recovery & watch them succeed.
What I love most about working in Southeast Michigan
Working in Southeastern Michigan is truly a one of a kind experience because of its diversity, the opportunities, & its culture. I was raised in Detroit and I got to experience a lot of aspects of what makes my city unique. Since elementary I have been exposed to many opportunities as well as experiences in the city of Detroit. My high school immersed me into a very diverse atmosphere. This experience gave me the opportunity to learn & engage with people from different cultures as well as walks of life.
